“Photography is an art to express various emotions,” quips Nicky Ledesma when asked about his craft. His journey as a visual artist began as a hobby back in the 70s when his photography mentor, former Negros Occidental Governor Rafael “Lito” Coscolluella, introduced him to the works of Ansel Adams, a celebrated American landscape photographer and conservationist whose works are described as tributes to nature’s monuments. Adams, together with notable American portrait photographer, Fred Archer, developed a “Zone System” technique for black and white photography, which allowed the photographer to create expressive images through a sea of tones or a jungle of textures. Ledesma reminisces, “This technique created a huge impact as I got to understand the beauty of the different zones which I utilized on my photos.”

While taking up Marketing at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod, he honed his skills by covering school activities. Ledesma says that his first exposure to photography came with “challenges of having to develop and print my own pictures.” His perseverance paid off at the 1979 Cultural Days Photography Contest of his alma mater where he competed against Arts and Mass Communication students who had the advantage of photography classes. He was bestowed with four of the top five awards, including the First Prize with his work, Hands I.

In the early 80s, Ledesma became a pioneer member of the Camera Club of Negros (CCN), which was established to showcase the beauty of both Negros Occidental and Oriental. “Today,” he shares, “it also aims to develop photographers and the youth with free workshops to entice them to take up the hobby in the purest form through digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras and not only cellphone cameras.” Through the years, Ledesma contributed to its major endeavors including the creation of the portfolio of the House of Negros (now the Association of Negros Producers). He recalls, “It was roughly done at the onset as we lacked the resources, like studio lights and equipment, but it was a start.” Having been President of CCN in 1993 and in 2008, he considers the trust of his fellow photographers as one of the best recognitions he has received, aside from the top prize for the Landscape Category during the Silay City Photography Contest in 2008.

His works featuring scenic spots in Negros, along with those of other CCN members, were exhibited in partnership with the Department of Tourism at both the old and new airports of Bacolod. As a conservationist, he remains proud of CCN’s first project aimed at awakening social awareness: the documentation of illegal logging activities in Don Salvador Benedicto, a mountain municipality 52 kilometers east of Bacolod City, also known as the “Summer Capital of Negros Occidental.” The intriguing photographs from this collaborative endeavor saw print in local, national, and international newspapers.

The passion for nature conservation is evident not only in Ledesma’s works but also in his words. When asked about the natural treasures of Negros, he becomes both pragmatic and idealistic: “Our environment needs the most protection. Trees to protect us from floods, to shade us, and to create beautiful landscapes that only Mother Nature can offer. Ours are God-given and not manmade. If our mountains continue to be bald because of illegal logging, what will protect us from floods?” He is hopeful that his art will help open the eyes of his fellow Negrenses and move them to help protect the region’s natural resources for future generations to enjoy.

Heritage houses are also a passion for Ledesma who grew up in Silay City, touted as the “Paris of Negros”. He describes his hometown as “a small city filled with so much culture and heritage.” Thanks to Republic Act 10066, The National Cultural Heritage Act, ancestral homes in Silay, such as the Balay Negrense and the Maria Ledesma Golez heritage house, are protected and preserved as cultural properties of the country. It is no wonder that Ledesma’s work frequently features the architectural treasures of his hometown. He discloses, “The beauty of our landscapes and our cultural heritage reflected in these colonial homes have influenced my subject preferences. However, while we have managed to protect our heritage houses, our environment should be protected as well.” Ledesma’s dream is to shoot all the heritage houses in monochrome for a photobook for Silay.

Going beyond the influence of Ansel Adams, Ledesma’s images are an amalgam of nature and humanity. He explains, “While landscapes have been my favorite subject, my photography has evolved in connecting emotions to the environment.” His photograph, entitled “Bredco Boat,” is evocative of both the melancholia of a fishing vessel cast ashore and the threatening menace of dark clouds looming over calm seas. It captures the beauty of nature and the reality of human nature in one moment. Of his images, he imparts, “nature and humanity need to come together for our sceneries and landscapes to survive. The human element bridges that gap.”

Text by: Neil Angelo F. The adoption of digital health passes involving both COVID-19 testing and vaccination records will enable customers to fly with convenience and confidence, laying the groundwork for hassle-free international air travel.

22 July 2021

Cathay Pacific is the first airline to complete a trial with CommonPass involving both testing and vaccination records on an end-to-end, round-trip journey. It is also the first airline in Asia Pacific to trial the use of official vaccination records with customers in a live flight environment.

The volunteer customers used their personal vaccination and/or pre-departure COVID-19 PCR test records to create digital health passes using the CommonPass app. Customers on Cathay Pacific flight CX691, which departed from Hong Kong to Singapore on 6 July, used the Hong Kong SAR Government’s vaccine code (generated using the iAM Smart app). Meanwhile, those on Cathay Pacific flight CX690, which departed from Singapore to Hong Kong on 15 July, used Singapore’s HealthCerts PCR test result. The platform interpreted and validated these records against the travel rules for the customers’ itineraries and produced a digital health pass that showed their eligibility to travel.

Initial customer feedback during the trials indicated that CommonPass was easy to install and simple to use, with the vast majority saying they would be willing to use digital health passes in future. The longer-term objective is for digital health passes to replace the need for customers to carry multiple paper-based records when travelling.

The trials were organised in collaboration with The Commons Project and the Airport Authority Hong Kong. These also follow the successful completion of digital health pass trials in March this year and October last year.

General Manager Customer Experience and Design Vivian Lo said: “We have been continuously striving to provide a seamless experience for our customers while they are travelling in a complex world of border-entry requirements and health certifications. We believe the use of digital health passes can significantly alleviate travel uncertainties, while providing greater reassurance and confidence to our customers.

“These trials will pave the way for the reopening of our international flight routes, while the collaborationwith our trial partners has enabled us to demonstrate to our industry peers and the border authorities the functionality of digital health passes using testing and vaccination records authorised by the authorities.”

The Commons Project Executive Chairman Jennifer Zhu Scott said: “Vaccination records have become critical to safely reopening international travel. As our trusted partner from day one, Cathay Pacific has once again been a pioneer by being the first airline to successfully complete two-way trials during which customers used CommonPass to generate a digital health pass with their testing and vaccination records from local official registries.

“The Cathay Pacific team’s deep industry expertise, resilience and innovative spirit adds tremendous value to The Commons Project’s global effort in facilitating safe reopening by empowering individuals to control and manage their health data. We look forward to collaborating with Cathay Pacific further to benefit the airline’s customers around the world.”

Since early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, Cathay Pacific has been researching ways to make travel easier and more accessible. We are proud to have been involved with The Commons Project for the past 15 months in the design and development of the CommonPass app.

In addition to its work with CommonPass, Cathay Pacific is a member of the IATA Travel Pass User Group.

About The Commons Project
CommonPass is developed by The Commons Project, a non-profit public trust established with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, which builds and operates digital platforms and services for the common good. And while it may have come out of nowhere, it makes sense that Nintendo’s most successful character, built on the idea of constantly staying active, should walk, run or jump into the hearts of TAG Heuer fans with the TAG Heuer Connected Super Mario watch.

With nostalgia caked into the new TAG Heuer Connected Super Mario watch, the limited edition release will see just 2,000 pieces offered from the launch date on July 15th. Available online, or via selected TAG Heuer boutiques around the world, the 45mm smartwatch will boast a unique Super Mario dial to complement the suite of features Connected watch users have come to love. These include a heart rate monitor, GPS, compass, accelerometer, metrics, and recorded activities with third-party integration, gamifying goals and helping wearers achieve them throughout the day, with real-time feedback, in tandem with the house-designed TAG Heuer Sport app.

Arriving in a steel case with a very comfortable rubber strap, the TAG Heuer Connected Super Mario watch provides excellent wearability for any land or water-based activities, down to 5ATM (50m). The 430 mAh battery should provide wearers enough juice for a full day under normal usage conditions – that is, 20 hours with 1 hour of activity, and 6 hours for more intensive sports use utilising the GPS, heart rate, and music functions.

“For this collaboration with Nintendo, Super Mario instantly came to our minds”, said Frédéric Arnault, CEO of TAG Heuer. “And it’s not just his international and intergenerational appeal that clinched it. Mario is the ultimate super-active character whose perseverance and tenacity get him out of every situation”.

The most unique feature of the TAG Heuer connected is not just the seamless blend of smartwatch with traditional chronograph, it’s the exclusive watch dial. The Swiss watchmaking icons have taken the idea of gamification a bit further than expected, where Mario springs to life as a dynamic character, greeting the wearer with a welcoming salute in the morning, and becoming more animated as the day goes on and as those fitness goals are kicked.

Mario’s presence on the watch was apparently inspired by the idea of “Easter eggs” in video games, which for the unfamiliar, typically involves game designers hiding features and surprises as bonuses for players to unlock while they play through the story. As the wearer racks up their step count, the watch unlocks rewards at each stage of the set daily target.

The other elements of the dial represent TAG Heuer’s playful take on their famous Connected watch faces, reinterpreted across four versions where dials include special details nodding to the history of Super Mario and Nintendo. This includes two versions of the Heuer 02 watch face – one reskinned and remixed with Super Mario’s emblematic red and blue colours, and the other with subtle touches of the plumber’s signature red hat.

The Timekeeping dial leans more towards retro elements from the 1985 version of Super Mario Bros., featuring the titular character in pixel form. This is contrasted with the Orbital watch face version, where the usual neural network is replaced by Super Mario iconography rotating in a mesmerising movement.

Nintendo references aren’t restricted to the dial. On the exterior, the TAG Heuer Connected Limited Edition features a bezel graduation, push buttons, and crown logo designed with the same colour of Mario’s red hat, dramatically separating it from the core Connected collection.

The bezel has been designed with three Super Mario booster symbols at the 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock, and 9 o’clock positions, aligning with the Mario icons included in the dial animations so wearers can unlock and constantly discover new items while they are out achieving their fitness goals in real life.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12052999.post-11487984784242872742021-06-19T15:04:00.008+08:002021-06-19T15:05:47.627+08:00Filipina U.S. Women’s Open Golf champion Yuka Saso honored with special stamp

Teen golf star Yuka Saso, the first Filipina to win the United States Women’s Open Championship, will soon be featured in a special postage stamp issued by the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost).

The PHLPost announced in a Facebook post on June 9, 2021, that Saso will be honored with a new stamp and postcard to commemorate her historic victory.

“Thank you Yuka Saso for bringing home so much honor to the Philippines as the 1st Filipino to win the US Women’s Open Golf Championship at 19 years old,” Postmaster General Norman “Mr. Postman” Fulgencio said.

The 19-year-old Filipino-Japanese golfer also made history as the youngest champion of the tournament, tying with Inbee Park of South Korea, who achieved the same feat in 2008.

Yuka Saso climbed to 9th rank in the Women’s World Golf rankings after the win, bringing her closer to a Tokyo Olympics berth for the Philippines.

“Your much deserved Post Office Stamp and Postcard are now being prepared. Zeiss Is Finally Releasing Its Photoshop-Equipped Full-Frame Camera

35 years ago, I was the stereotypical Fine Arts student lugging a Nikon SLR daily to school. I shot a lot of pics, developed them myself and printed it in my own darkroom.

I spent too much on building up my gear only to find out that this was an endless quest to perfection. So when the digital SLR era came about, I never joined the bandwagon. I missed the entire DSLR period and bought a camera again only when better mirror-less cameras came out.

It's a decision I partly regret because I realize that I could have taken better photos of my kids then. However, I tried to avoid falling into the trap of buying gear that would soon be outmoded.

Finally, I've seen something I like.

Two years ago, Zeiss championed its very first full-frame digital camera with Android connectivity. In the time since, the platform — dubbed the ZX1 — was seemingly lost in translation, with no release date in sight. Over the weekend, however, the company revealed that the long-awaited launch would actually take place this year; within the coming months, even.

Thanks to the recent listing of the ZX1 on B&H, it seems that the rumors are true. For those of you who don’t know, the camera is Zeiss’s first full-frame model established under the “Shoot, Edit, and Share” ethos. Since it runs on the Android operating system, users will be able to capture amazing stills with the camera’s 37-megapixel sensor and fixed 35mm f/2 lens before editing them on an integrated version of Adobe Lightroom. Users will be able to utilize the ZX1’s 4.3-inch touchscreen for cropping, and color correction functions. Editing on-the-go will now become easier than ever. Since it features a suite of built-in technologies like Wi-Fi and USB-C, you can transfer your finished photos directly to your phone, computer, or smart device without having to tether up.

It looks like a really good camera. The only barrier may be the price at $6,000!

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1436638-REG/zeiss_zx1_digital_camera.html

A growing number of male entrepreneurs are turning to intravenous vitamin (IV) infusions to boost their immune system, energy and well-being, as seen on social media posts.

From the posts on Instagram, executives as well as doctors and the usual celebrities have been using IV drips as a means to primarily boost the immune system given the pandemic situation right now.

Vitamin infusions, which are popular with celebrities like Madonna and Simon Cowell, deliver vitamins and minerals directly into the bloodstream.

Advocates of the process, which takes around 45 minutes, regard it as an efficient means of boosting energy and staying healthy, since unlike with vitamin tablets, all the nutrients are absorbed by the body, potentially at much higher doses.

A marketing executive in Makati Central Business District says, "I’m interested in all types of natural ways to improve health and immunity given the situation right now with COVID-19 and after I tried an infusion I was amazed by how good it made me feel and the longevity of the benefits it gave me,” he said.

He added that, “There’s no better natural way of achieving that than a vitamin infusion. They literally make you feel buzzing with energy and vitality. I'll be doing this again next month.”

Outdoor.PH looked into this and how it goes is that in lieu of a visit to a clinic, a Mobile Wellness Van comes to the person's office or residence, parks street-side and does the IV infusion for an hour or so.

Apart from executives, even sports coaches have also been found to go for IV Therapy to boost the immune system.

MAKATI CITY, Philippines - Now that I have converted this blog of mine from a journal on Out-Of-Home Media to a blog on the Outdoor Lifestyle, I've found the perfect place to write about my hidden affinity for a Land Rover.

I've never owned a Land Rover but the first time I came across the name was when my grandfather referred to it as his ride in his ranch in Davao Del Sur in the late 1960s and into the1970s. I do not know what year he purchased it but my grandfather and my uncle who was based in Digos, Davao Del Sur, used it as a daily workhorse. This is also that same Land Rover he used when he brought the great aviator, Charles Augustus Lindbergh to Mount Apo in 1969.

The next instance of a Land Rover being in close proximity was when I was in grade school in Bacolod. At this time, our family had an advertising business and one of its clients was DuPont for its fertilizer products. For a time, the company's Land Rover was parked at the house. Unused by anyone except for this one occasion when my Dad used it on my grade school graduation day.

So while it was never something that we owned, there is this strong emotional connection with a Land Rover. When you take into consideration the kind of terrain we have in the Philippines, one of the few vehicles that was fit for the purpose of handling the very difficult conditions here was a was a Land Rover. Subsequently the Land Rover which evolved in modern days as the Defender are still seen in remote communities in Malaysia, Nepal, Myanmar.

We have our own share in the Philippines. In the mid-1990s, I recall having visited Gamboa Hermanos in San Carlos, Negros Occidental, and all their service vehicles were still Land Rovers! One can attribute that to the very functional nature of the vehicle. LR Defenders are built to do a job of work. They're built to be off-road capable and extremely durable. And because of that, as a vehicle, it somehow just transcends the perhaps other vehicle choices that are out there.

In the next few posts here on OUTDOOR.PH, I'll be spending some time talking about the new Land Rover 2020. For now, I'm watching an old film entitled, "The Gods Must Be Crazy".
BGC, TAGUIG, Philippines - If there is a complete empowered woman that pushes living beyond the limits, it has to be Coach Amy Berezowski. We met up with Coach Amy Berezowski via Zoom and asked her for some tips given the situation of the quarantine where people just stay indoors and tend to hang loose in terms of their nutrition.

For those who have not come across her, Coach Amy (IG:@deadaimamy) arrived in the Philippines three years ago to just visit for three months. She fell in love with the Philippines and the three months has stretched into three years! Judging from Coach Amy's past experiences, her multi-faceted character makes her a perfect example of going for gold in one's personal endeavors.

She's been through several transitions which astound us. From University Student, to Amateur Boxer, to Foreign ESL Teacher, Professional Mini Flyweight Boxer, Sponsored Athlete, Female Business Owner, Boxing Coach, to Reality TV Star, to CEO and Head Coach, Human Activist, Boxing Equipment Creator, Fashion Designer, the list keeps going and we are awed.
During this pandemic and as the quarantine set in last March, Coach Amy has found that although there were setbacks in terms of meeting students for their coaching sessions, she has been more active in coaching through online media. The interesting part is that her coaching now knows no borders as she can practice with those who are based in other countries.

Zooming into the health aspect of things, Coach Amy had to say this: "Even before the pandemic, Health is really Wealth". Now with the threat of the virus, this statement has been emphasized in a greater way. It's all the more important now to get one's immunity up.

Our take is that just like in the sport of boxing, defense counts a lot. So in the same manner, our body needs to have a strong defense against the threats to health.

Proper nutrition plays a big part as Mother Nature has provided a lot of what we need through fruits and veggies.

Apart from proper nutrition, Coach Amy has also been boosting her immune system by way of Intravenous Drips provided by an FDA approved and reputable company. For this, she turns to REVIV Philippines which has 5 different drips and 4 Booster shots to choose from.
REVIV Philippines has a Mobile Wellness Van which comes to her village and provides the IV drips that deliver the nutrients, fluids, electrolytes ahd antioxidants that the body needs.

For Coach Amy, apart from the physical benefits of the REVIV IV Drip, there are also mental benefits to doing this. Coming from a person who also does mindset coaching for corporate entities, Coach Amy says that, "What's good for the body is good for the mind", considering that having a drip sets the mental stage for being prepared for the threats of disease.
MAKATI CITY - COVID 19 infections are on the rise and after reading the news on the Pinoygolfer Facebook group about the closure of a few golf clubs because of an irresponsible player who was eventually found out to be positive for COVID19 after he had already gone out to play in a few courses and thus endangering the lives of people in those clubs, it made me think that this pandemic situation we are currently experience is a tricky one. Our enemy is an invisible one. The Corona Virus also known as COVID 19 and the adverse effects it may bring has undoubtedly changed so much of our ways. Most obvious is the change in our attitudes towards preserving health.

Before there was the Out-Of-Home Media Advertising Association of the Philippines, there was the OAAP, commpnly known as the Outdoor Advertising Association of the Philippines. Our previous organization bore this history below:

In the beginning, there was only outdoor advertising...

Advertising
in the early times were mere messages carved in stone plates, and
notices printed on walls. It was only the form of advertising then, it
was outdoor advertising.

Outdoor advertising, for a time, enjoyed
this monopoly until print, (newspaper and magazines) and radio
technologies were invented and developed. Up the early 1960s in the
Philippines, outdoor advertising was regarded as the primary advertising
medium, a status reinforced when 15 established outdoor advertising
companies organized themselves into one cohesive, solid voice to form
the Outdoor Advertising Association of the Philippines Inc (OAAP) on
August 13, 1964. Its purpose was to promote the growth of the outdoor
advertising in the Philippines by establishing its own Code of Ethics.

Fifteen founding members made up of its
first aggrupation: ACME Neon Lights, Advertising Associates, Hi-Art
Reproduction, House of Racor, Luzon Advertising, Manalang Advertising,
Manila Neon Lights, Martin Outdoor, MJ Gonzales & Associates, Modern
Advertising, Outdoor Advertising of the Philippines, Lunod &
Associates, Sierra Neon, United Neon Lights, and Universal Sales
Promotions.

Outdoor Advertising has gone a long way:
From stone and wall carvings, to hand-painted billboards, and now to
high-tech, large-format photographic print, 3D inflatable, and big
screen electronic signages. And then there are the undying, reliable,
and colourful neon signs lightning up the city nightlife.

Only in outdoor advertising can one show
the signs of the times like no other advertising medium. In one glance,
outdoor advertising blends wonderfully past, present and future.

The 1964 FOUNDERS
1. Acme Neon Lights’
2. Advertising Associates Inc.
3. Hi-Art Reproduction
4. House of Ractor
5. Luzon Advertising
6. Manalang Advertising
7. Manila Neon Lights
8. Martin Outdoor
9. MJ Gonzales & Associates
10. Modern Advertising
11. Outdoor Advertising of the Philippines
12. Lunod & Associates
13. Sierra Neon
14. United Neon Lights
15. Universal Sales Promotions

OAAP VISION
We
envision an association whose members abide by the Code of Ethics in
the practice of their profession and guided by the principle of
self-regulation, and be the only outdoor advertising association
recognized by the advertising industry as well as the government.

OAAP MISSION
We
endeavour members to be responsible citizens who practice
self-regulation within our industry and who collaborate with the
government as we observe public safety, environmental concerns, the rule
of law and respect for one another in the practice of our profession
vis-a-vis promoting the greater importance of the outdoor media in the
service of our advertising industry, our community and our country.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12052999.post-91701347632477386292020-04-17T21:02:00.000+08:002020-08-22T17:58:50.278+08:00OOH POV : COVID19 versus Milenyo Aftermath - Which One Hurt The OOH Industry More?

<a 1="" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY8h20VDWFiYEG6aj97QP9wyXWHvfWbrAuUF-zrrn6HXjlWxb7DgHzwO03mO9WHK-6tnpIwxTrG4O_c3VoQY5C9XkvNyXC5q84q6T9uyAn-WPXYHPdU17Na6ICbgILjATsjEpQmA/s320/IMG_1742.JPGimageanchor=" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

When Typhoon Milenyo struck the Philippines in September 2006, we all witnessed how the OOH media industry careened to the edge of a precipice which spelled sure financial disaster. As if the physical damage wasn't enough and OOH suppliers were spending money not rebuilding sites but clearing the pieces of steel debris, the industry had to deal with the likes of the feisty Sen. Miriam Santiago who had her own crusade against billboard blight.

If you remember those days, then I could only draw two conclusions. One, you are old. Ouch! I'm sorry to rub it in but this also denotes one thing: You are mature enough to know that this current onslaught of COVID19 and the ECQ is something which we will hurdle. Tough times don't last but tough people do.

After Milenyo, advertisers spent the lowest percentage of their budgets towards outdoor media. I recall that we were hovering at a measly 6% of total adspend. The following year, 2007, did not show any hope as well. But we made it through.

The second conclusion I am drawing from the statement I made earlier whether you recall the days of Milenyo is that you would have recalled that by the end of 2010, the outdoor media industry was approaching double digit adspend numbers. OOH was back on track even despite all the trouble DPWH and LGUs were giving the suppliers in terms of permits.

Milenyo Aftermath

Enter COVID19. Today we are faced with a pandemic which has kept people off the streets. We are now spending most of our time indoors and hardly in contact with any OOH media. Out of home media audience delivery is at its lowest. In the first two weeks we've seen some multinational brand pull out their total advertising budgets and realigning it to COVID relief efforts. Hardest hit are the restaurants and the tourism industries.

Prior to COVID, we've been seeing a lot of food related OOH being displayed. Now, there is hardly any relevance for OOH in the cycle of purchasing food.

So we now go to the question posted in the title of this blog post. Which will hurt more, COVID19 or Milenyo?

Well, there are many factors to consider. One thing I can say though is that although the wound COVID is causing to business is deep, OOH suppliers should be thankful that the physical properties are intact (unlike after Milenyo).

What is placed on the physical properties is a different story. And we are not just talking of the roadside billboards we are accustomed to. Think about the lightboxes and LCDs in the malls. The malls to begin with are closed. I shudder to think about the revenue deliveries of those whose properties are based in the mall. Then you have transit media.

Overall, this wound is really deep. Does COVID hurt more than Milenyo? Let me answer it this way. OOH is a kind of business where when things are good, it is really good! When it's bad, things really hurt a lot.

Nevertheless, it's not something we can't crawl out off. Even if ECQ is extended another 15 days.
MAKATI CITY, Philippines - It's January 1 and EDSA, the OOH Media industry's favorite highway is flowing smoothly. No, not just flowing smoothly, you can actually run your car at 130 kph and hope you don't crash into a motorcycle that abruptly changes lane.

Today is still a holiday so this post is not really work related. For those of you who normally follow this blog, the only blog and news central for the out-of-home media industry, this is the day that I poke fun at the funny billboards on the thoroughfares of EDSA, C5, NLEX, and SLEX.

January 1 for me and this blog is like April 1 - April Fool's Day. This is the day when news treads that thin line with comedy and a good dose of sarcasm.

To date, the OOH advertising industry has grown in a way that it is hardly treated as a support medium to "mainstream" or tri-media campaigns. It also has weaved itself well into social media usage that any billboard on EDSA which displays some peculiar story can go viral in hours.

Take the example of the billboard in the top picture which caught my interest this morning. I don't know which brand owns this, but immediately, in my "kulit" and "malikot" mind, I saw it as an advertisement for the manananggal or aswang lifestyle.

My apologies to the brand who owns the billboard. I'm just trying to drive the point that there is power in outdoor advertising. The power is much like electricity. Used properly, it brings ease and enhancement to campaigns. Neglected without supervision, it could mean disaster or death. In our case, brand disaster, or the death of a political career.
MAKATI CITY, Philippines - There was a time when outdoor advertising stepped into the limelight of the media mix, being hailed as the relevant medium given the fragmentation of broadcast media and the increased mobility of the urban consumer. Hard to believe, time has zipped by so quickly that we can pinpoint that time to a quarter of a century ago. In 25 years, minimal strides have been made to measure the viability of outdoor, or out-of-home media as we know it.

For the longest time, measurement lived within the domain of OOH media specialist groups. Now, more than ever, the need for measurement in OOH is a pressing need. The simple reason is because the next medium which came in and has stolen the limelight from OOH is highly measurable.

Yes, we are talking about digital media. Digital across both mobile and desktop. It's nearly impossible today to read any advertising trends article that
does not mention the explosive growth in digital, particularly mobile.

Here in the Philippines, other media have taken a hit on the resounding popularity of digital. Marketers love digital because they know two things : One, they themselves are engrossed in it, and Two, the medium can be measured.

To date, the OOH advertising industry has lacked the reliable performance metrics that today's media planners and marketers seek before committing money to a placement. OOH companies need reliable data and analytics tools to demonstrate the reach, frequency and return on investment their channel can offer. This is something which I have seen since the time I was in McCann when we took the lead in agency-managed OOH media. Clients need the analytics in order to defend their spends in OOH to upper management.

From the time I left the agency, some years back, I have been working on an efficient measurement system which will at least provide the confidence to clients with regard to their spending in OOH media. The approach is more intelligent in the sense that there are more data points to measure and the raw data such as traffic count is more up-to-date.

While this is good news to the clients and brands, I have expected that this will not sit well with some of the partners on the supply side. This is simply because when placed under the scrutiny of stringent and systematic measurement, some placements should actually be dismissed and tossed out of the media plan.
It is just that over time, the landscape on thoroughfares like EDSA has changed. EDSA for example is now becoming a dark corridor of condominiums in some parts. What was a highly visible billboard back in 2008 is no longer as effective now.

The tools are now here to justify client spending on OOH and, put OOH back in the game. The question is, as has always been, "Who's going to pay for it?"

MANILA, Philippines - Yesterday afternoon, a researcher from GMA's Unang Hirit called me to ask if my company had entertained a client who requested to use a billboard for a wedding proposal. I told her, "I used a billboard for the same message (wedding proposal) but it was only to attract attention to sell the available space".

Putting up a billboard (static tarpaulin) is not cheap. Printing the tarpaulin alone will set you back by 50,000 Pesos minimum. Then of course, there's the media rental (payment for the actual use of the space) which has a minimum contract of one month.

The first time I recall that a billboard was used for a wedding proposal message was in Bacolod City. The year was 1997. The girl's name was a fictitious Trina.

Soon after, my friend and colleague in the industry, Alvin Carranza, came up with one too. That was posted in Bacoor, Cavite. I recall that it even made it to the front page of the Philippine Star around the year 2000.

Moving on, sometime in February 2014, HDI Adventures came up with a full blown campaign which covered EDSA waiting sheds with the message, "Olivia, will you marry me?".

More often than not, any marriage proposal you will see on a tarpaulin billboard will be some sort of a publicity gimmick by the outdoor advertising company.

The recent case of Erich Gonzales being asked out for a coffee date is the exception.
Let's face it. Most graphic designers do not know how to speak Sign Language. No, I am not referring to hand signals for the deaf. I am referring to Effective Outdoor Communication.

Having been involved in outdoor advertising for a number of years, I have seen so many layouts violating the basic rules of effective outdoor communication. The following posts on OUTDOOR.PH would enumerate my top 10 list of worst billboard layouts I ever saw.

Number 10 would be this execution by Accenture. Posted in June of 2010, this billboard has more than enough words as the lyrics of Bayan Ko.

So much for High Performance Delivered.

Next post, number 9.
There is a term which may not be easily grasped by millennials these days. The term is Y2K. Those who have been around know what kind of fuzz there was prior to the coming of the new millennium. Yes, there was excitement in the dawning of the year 2000, but also a bit of fear as doomsayers said that the world banking systems would crash given the millennium bug.

Such was the mood back then. Opportunity mixed with risks. It was not any different in the scene of advertising agencies. A few years prior to the millennium, media independents started taking rise. Media independents were characterized by the un-bundling of the media department services and spinning off to become an independent business unit.

Whereas once upon a time, advertising agency work was typically characterized by the men in suits and the wacky creatives, the media people who were the supposedly the boring number crunchers in the backroom suddenly gained more importance.

Media selection had to become more targeted and thoroughly selected. Gone were the days of shooting from the hip with a TV-radio-print template.

First to go the media independent way in this market was the media group of J. Walter Thompson. Mindshare was birthed to plan and buy media not just for JWT Philippines but also for sister agency, Ogilvy.

Minda R. Lansang, then VP for Media, of JWT Philippines was the seasoned trailblazer in this space running the Mindshare shop with a few expats. Not too far away in what was then Herrera Street (now V.A. Rufino), Universal Media, the media department of McCann-Erickson Philippines evolved into UniversalMcCann (UM).

The work of media planning and buying became more intricate as agencies had to utilize their insights into consumer buying behavior and media consumption habits to devise strategic media plans. The purpose was to ensure significant reach so that the target audience will see, read or hear the advertisement.

At about that time, Out-Of-Home media was hardly bought by advertising agencies. Most OOH placements were direct buys between client and OOH vendor. In fact, there was no fancy term as OOH then. It was simply billboard, Pearl & Dean, neon, and outdoor advertising. Those were the terms known to agencies and marketers.

12'x36' G.I. sheet handpainted billboard on Roxas Boulevard (photo from Advertising Associates, Inc.)

There was an economical reason for agencies to do so at that time. Booking outdoor was not simply worth the time and effort because of the minimal cost of media. Even at a luxurious commission of 15% (luxurious by today's standards), there was no sense in having to get a 15% from a 10,000 peso per month billboard made on Galvanized Iron sheets and hand painted with enamel, mounted on wooden structures.

Those who were at EDSA during the people power revolution remember that billboard which had "The Family That Prays Together Stays Together" at the corner where Robinsons Galeria is today. That was the iconic example of a 12'x36' billboard.

I grew up in that environment. Back in Bacolod City, my late father, Larry Tronco, ran Tronco Advertising Co., Inc. doing all the San Miguel Beer "Ito and Beer" ads in the late 1970s.

(to be continued)
Without having to cast doubts on the overall health of the industry, I'd like to state outright that the next few articles I will be writing for Outdoor.PH will zoom in on an important section of the OOH Media ecosystem, which is the OOH Media Agency, also known as OOH Media Specialist groups.

It will be an interesting look at OOH Media agencies or outdoor media units within media independents, and how they have performed over the decade and a half that this trend started coming into play.

Having seen the inception of Out-Of-Home media specialists from the time it was pioneered by UniversalMcCann, a lot of changes have come through. Time and space on this blog may not be able to contain all the colorful stories in OOH, including all the headaches which come along with handling the medium. There is a term which may not be easily grasped by millennials these
days. The term is Y2K. Those who have been around know what kind of
fuzz there was prior to the coming of the new millennium. Yes, there
was excitement in the dawning of the year 2000, but also a bit of fear
as doomsayers said that the world banking systems would crash ... <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Read More
If you've been traveling along the EDSA Northbound lane, Guadalupe, you may have noticed that the former spectacular billboard of Smart and Sun is currently being transformed into a giant LED screen.

While the size of this LED will not exceed the wall mounted LEDs on the PET Plans Building used by Coke and its Non-Carbonated beverages, and the one of Samsung on the GA Tower, the presence of this LED will be of great impact. The position is superb because it hits the traffic descending from Guadalupe on the Makati side in arena-like fashion.

With the erection of this LED comes not too good news for the brands surrounding it. Most affected will be the array of Bench billboards to the right. As it is, Bench is spending millions of PhP on the multiple panels on the right side of the LED. Even so, the Bench array has a few flaws, most obvious would be the fact that the outer and supplementary panels to the direction of Pasig do not really stare back onto the traffic on EDSA.

Worsening the situation for the Bench billboards is the efficient traffic management of MMDA which herds the commuter buses to the right lane and thus obstructing the view of motorists in the center lanes. This is easy to picture out in the topmost photo where a bus easily covers the view of the Bench billboard array.

Given that scenario, the erection of the LED will further distract the viewer away from the Bench array. It will even distract the viewer away from the competing LED.

So what is Bench to do? Well, if I were Bench and money was not an issue, I would lock-out the entire LED and make it part of the entire array thereby having a great mix of LED and static at the same time.

MANILA, Philippines - With more billboards and LED screens coming up in the metropolis, there is an urgent need for the outdoor advertising industry to come up with its own traffic count of the main thoroughfares if it is to deliver effective measure to the primary stakeholders which are the advertisers and clients.

"The current traffic counts will no longer do", said Lloyd Tronco, Executive Director of the Philippine Center for Out-Of-Home Media Research and Science.

"Most of these numbers used are from previous studies of the MMDA and Traffic Engineering Center", he added. "Neither can we resort to the National Center for Transportation Studies in UP Diliman because the data is also culled from MMDA and TEC".

A more recent traffic count is needed as this is the basic building block to determine DNV (Daily Net Viewership) of an outdoor advertising medium, be it a static tarpaulin or an LED billboard.

Tronco adds, "Any OOH media agency can claim that they have some form of measurement of viewership for static or LED panels but the thing is, if you start off with the wrong traffic count, the 'measurement' is useless. Down the line, as you compute for DNV, you can have a variance of as much as 15,000 eyeballs and that's a lot."

Likewise noted is that for a variance of even 10,000 in a billboard's DNV, a great difference can be brought about on other factors such as Cost Per Thousand.

Currently, the Philippine Center for Out-Of-Home Media Research and Science more commonly known in the industry as PhilCouRSe is talking to potential partners who will help in the completion of a long overdue method of measurement.
